SFV Roller Derby Bout Coming to Sylmar

A reader tipped me off this week about a kick-ass all-women’s roller derby league in the San Fernando Valley. Just watching the YouTube clip about SFV Roller Derby (SFVRD) has got me feeling like I want to both cry and ram someone into the wall.

The league is the first and only flat track roller derby league in the San Fernando Valley, and the season opener is set for Saturday, Jan. 11, at 6:30 p.m. The interleague bout will pit the Reseda Wreckers against the Topanga Maul Rats at The Lot, 12900 Bradley Ave., Sylmar. You can get all the details by checking out our Events page.

The league welcomes new talent — you don’t even have to know how to roller skate — at their monthly new skater night called “first date.” If you’re over 18, email Recruits@sfvrollerderby.com to RSVP, and they’ll send you additional information. Roller derby is only open to females, but they have roles for men as well, such as refereeing.

Check out their website to learn more, and grab a tissue before you watch the clip.

i am san fernando is April Aguirre, a writer born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. April bounced around the Valley throughout her upbringing and lived outside of California for a quick minute but always felt most at home in the city of San Fernando. To get at April's heart, FedEx puppies to her door, offer In-N-Out cheeseburgers by the dozen or introduce her to a beer tastier than the last.
