Weekend Event Roundup

It’s going to be a busy weekend in San Fernando, so here are the essential events for quick reference. If you’re in the mood for comedy, art or feel-good efforts to promote healthy living, don’t sleep on things to do this weekend. Friday, July 8

Mike the Poet: open mic night featuring Mike Sonsen, spoken word artist, journalist and educator. Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore, 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Saturday, July 9

Relay for Life San Fernando: a 24-hour fundraising walk to aid the fight against cancer. San Fernando Recreation Park, 9 a.m. – 9 a.m.

Sylmar Farmer’s Market: fresh food and more from local vendors at this farmer’s market. This week, there will be a Kaiser/Los Angeles County health event, with fitness walks taking place at 9:15, 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. at El Cariso Park. Register near the market at the college first. Los Angeles Mission College, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Bike Ride: Bike a 7 to 10 mile ride through the community of San Fernando as part of Relay for Life 2011. Promote alternative transportation and a healthier lifestyle as a means to prevent cancer. San Fernando Recreation Park, 6 p.m.

Happy Birthday, Frida: an evening with George Yepes and his new Frida Kahlo-related artwork. Mademoiselle Boutique, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

House of Brews Comedy, Episode III: the third installment in a series of comedy nights starring Flip Schultz and magician The Great Omar. Also, in conjunction with the event, VFW bar (111 N. Hagar Street in San Fernando) will offer a special House of Brews Happy Hour before the show from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. House of Brews, 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Sunday, July 10

Art in Motion: the GR818ERS presents the first of what’s to be a monthly event. Live art, dance, music and an art exhibit. House of Brews, 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.
